WHO IS THE DISABLED COMMUNITY?

Most cities are utterly unfriendly to the disabled community, but a few cities are undergoing a remarkable shift. The disabled communities include people with cerebral palsy, autism, and down syndrome, as well as athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who have lost limbs. Disproportionate inclusion in the outdoors is often overlooked, and the mental and physical benefits of experiencing nature are thus only rewarded to those who can access it with ease.

Around the United States, and specifically in Santa Barbara County, there are multiple nonprofit groups and activists who are actively trying to expand outdoor access to disabled people. As spring approaches and warm weather calls to outdoor enthusiasts, spreading the access for nature is becoming a prioritized topic.

Santa Barbara is committed to ensuring that people with disabilities are able to take part in & benefit from its whole range of public programs, services, & activities.
